André Bonhomme Viré Clessé 2022

Since 1956, the Bonhomme family has been the standard-bearers for the Viré-Clessé appellation—long before it even had its own name. Their 2022 bottling is a gorgeous reminder of why we constantly return to this estate: it offers the kind of sun-drenched, mineral-driven opulence that punches way above its price point.

In the glass, this is pure Burgundy. The nose is an inviting mix of ripe Golden Delicious apples, white peach, and a touch of raw honeycomb, accented by fleeting notes of almond blossom and a hint of wet stone. On the palate, it’s remarkably generous but never heavy. The 2022 vintage brought a beautiful ripeness, giving the wine a fleshy texture that evokes Asian pear and lemon curd, all held together by a crystalline mineral spine and a refreshing, saline finish.

What makes Bonhomme special is the treatment of their old vines—some ranging up to 70 years old. By using a combination of stainless steel and neutral oak, they allow the fruit to shine while adding just enough weight to keep things interesting. It has that baby Meursault energy that makes it equally at home with a weeknight roast chicken as it is with a sophisticated seafood risotto.
