Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2019
$52.50
Isabel Ferrando took over the Saint Préfert domain in 2002 and has since transformed this historic estate into one of the most exciting producers in the southern quadrant of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2019 vintage is a standout, marking a pinnacle of Ferrando’s pursuit of elegance and purity.
This cuvée is a classic Southern Rhône blend, dominated by old-vine Grenache, with Mourvèdre and Cinsault lending structure and spice. In the glass, it shows a deep, shimmering ruby hue. The nose is a heady, aromatic trip through a Provencal market: think sun-drenched raspberries, dark cherries, and wild garrigue, all underscored by notes of black tea and incense.
On the palate, it’s remarkably fresh—a hallmark of the Saint Préfert style. While it possesses the power and ripeness you expect from a top-tier Châteauneuf, it remains incredibly graceful and lifted, with silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the dark fruit flavors in perfect check. The finish is long and sappy, leaving behind lingering echoes of kirsch and peppery spice.
This is a wine that rewards patience, but if you can’t wait to pull the cork, we recommend a good decant to let those high-toned aromatics really sing. Pair it with herb-roasted lamb, a hearty cassoulet, or even a simple plate of aged cheeses.
