Famille Isabel Ferrando Cotes Du Rhone Beatus Ille 2021
$32.50
When Isabel Ferrando took over Domaine Saint Préfert in 2002, she didn’t just maintain the status quo—she redefined it, moving toward organic and biodynamic practices that brought a new level of clarity and energy to the fruit. While her top-tier Châteauneufs can be towering, serious wines, “Beatus Ille” (Latin for “happy is he”) is her love letter to the simpler, joyful side of Provençal life.
The 2021 vintage is a standout for those who crave freshness. In a year that leaned toward elegance rather than brute heat, this blend—primarily old-vine Grenache with a healthy splash of Cinsault and a touch of Syrah—is absolutely singing.
It’s succulent and sappy, showing layers of red raspberry and bing cherry, but there’s a savory, peppery edge that keeps it grounded. The tannins are remarkably fine-grained—they’re “melted”, as Isabel puts it—giving the wine a silky, glide-like texture that makes it dangerously easy to drink.
What we love most here is the balance. You’re getting the pedigree of one of the Southern Rhône’s most talented winemakers in a format that’s meant for the dinner table tonight. It’s “baby Châteauneuf” in the best possible sense: complex, expressive, and brimming with life, but without the need for a decade in the cellar.
