Freire Lobo VIGNO White 2024
$15.00
Elisa Freire Lobo is doing something truly special. As the first female winemaker to establish her own estate in the region, Elisa is a pioneer of the granite-strewn foothills of the Serra da Estrela. Her “Vigno” Branco isn’t just a bottle of wine; it’s a living snapshot of 60-year-old vines and a landscape tended by a flock of Bordaleira sheep that double as the vineyard’s natural groundskeepers.
This is a field blend in the most traditional sense—a co-fermented medley of Encruzado, Bical, and Cerceal, with splashes of Fernão Pires and Barcelo. In the glass, it reveals a brilliant, straw-yellow hue that hints at the vibrancy to follow. The nose is a dizzying, evolving bouquet: imagine ripe apricots and orange blossoms meeting a savory, herbaceous edge of mint, dried basil, and a wisp of wet slate.
On the palate, there is a remarkable tension between weight and lift. The Encruzado provides a silky, almost creamy texture, while the old-vine acidity brings a persistent, briny minerality that reminds us of the Atlantic influence. It is dry, focused, and impeccably balanced—a far cry from the over-manipulated whites often found at this price point.
Elisa’s commitment to organic viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar allows the Dão’s rugged personality to shine through without any distracting oak. This is a wine for the “white wine adventurer,” yet it possesses an elegance that will please any fan of high acid whites.
