Gaujal St Bon Picpoul de Pinet 2025
$18.00
Picpoul is the unofficial house wine of the Mediterranean coast—bright, zippy, and practically built to be drunk cold alongside a tower of oysters or grilled sardines. The catch? Roughly 80% of the Picpoul on the market comes from massive regional co-ops. Most of it is perfectly pleasant, but it’s often rushed to bottle as simple, quick-quaffing porch pounder material.
Domaine Gaujal de Saint-Bon is a completely different story.
Run by the mother-daughter duo Simonne and Virginie Gaujal, this is the oldest estate in the appellation, and they treat Picpoul with the serious care usually reserved for premier crus. Where industrial producers push for massive yields, the Gaujals deliberately keep theirs low—capping production around 40 hectoliters per hectare. Rather than rushing the wine into a bottle, they let it rest on its fine lees for 7 to 8 months, which is nearly double the regional average.
In the glass you get all that classic, high-energy freshness—the word Picpoul literally translates to “lip-stinger” because of its electric acidity—but backed by actual substance and texture.
