Klaus Peter and Julia Keller have achieved a level of fame comparable only to Egon Müller in the Saar. In less than a decade, Keller has become one of Germany’s most revered wine estates.

What makes this remarkable is their location: the Rheinhessen, long considered one of the country’s least prestigious regions. Even more surprising, their estate sits in the “Hügelland,” an area once dismissed outright. Yet Keller has sparked a renaissance here, inspiring a new generation of winemakers and elevating vineyards once overlooked—sites such as Kirchspiel, Hubacker, Morstein, and Abtserde—into hallowed ground for Riesling.

From a single plot where Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner and Chardonnay were planted together — “muscheligen kalk” translates to “shelly lime.”
