La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva Vina Arana 2017
$65.00
The 2017 vintage in Rioja was defined by a notorious spring frost that decimated yields across the region, but for those who weathered the storm, the result was a crop of remarkable concentration. La Rioja Alta—the gold standard for traditionalism in the Barrio de la Estación—used this to their advantage, folding in grapes that would normally be destined for their top-tier “890” bottling.
This is a Gran Reserva that leans into freshness. A blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, it spent three years in American oak followed by three more in bottle before release. The nose is quintessentially Rioja: toasted coconut, vanilla bean, and cigar box dancing alongside vibrant red plum and wild raspberry. On the palate, it’s silky and lithe, showing a modern classic edge where the acidity is bright and the tannins are already beautifully integrated.
While many Gran Reservas demand a decade of patience, the 2017 Viña Arana is remarkably approachable now. It’s a sophisticated, soulful red that reminds us why Rioja remains one of the world’s greatest values for age-worthy wine.
