Luigi Ferrando Carema “Etichetta Nera” 2019
$120.00
Luigi Ferrando and the tiny, Alpine amphitheater of Carema are essentially one and the same. This is Northern Piedmont at its most breathtaking—where Nebbiolo clings to steep, glacial terraces and grows in the shadows of Mont Blanc.
Ferrando only produces two wines: the “Etichetta Bianca” (White Label) which is known for it’s silky, ethereal lift and the “Etichetta Nera” (Black Label) which he produces only in the absolute best vintages, selecting the finest fruit from choice parcels like Silanc and Siei.
The 2019 vintage in Carema was nothing short of spectacular, and it shows here. In the glass, you get that classic mountain Nebbiolo energy but with an added layer of dark fruit and savory depth that only the Black Label provides. Because it spends more time in barrique than its sibling, the structure is more pronounced, with tannins that feel firm but noble.
It’s a wine that demands a bit of patience (or a very long decant if you’re opening it tonight), but the payoff is immense.
