If you’re looking for the antithesis of the butter bomb Napa Chardonnay, you’ve found it. For over 130 years, Mayacamas has been perched on the rugged, volcanic slopes of Mt. Veeder, crafting wines that feel more like liquid granite than sunshine in a glass. The 2023 Chardonnay is no exception—it is a high-altitude athlete: lean, muscular, and incredibly focused. This vintage benefited from a long, cool growing season that allowed the fruit to develop deep complexity without losing its signature Veeder nerve.

On the nose you’ll find crushed flint, lemon verbena, and white flowers. It hits with a racy, electric acidity. You’ll find Anjou pear and green apple with a bead of salinity but it’s the structure that steals the show. The wine sees minimal new oak (only about 10%) and absolutely no malolactic fermentation, preserving a chiseled, phenolic texture that demands food.

By dry-farming their old Wente clone vines at 1,800 to 2,400 feet, they produce berries with thick skins and intense concentration. The result is a white wine that behaves like a red; it has the “stuffing” to age for a decade or more, though it’s undeniably fascinating to drink right now if you love high-wire acidity.
