Nigl Grüner Veltliner Privat Senftenberger Pellingen 2015

$65.00

Martin Nigl is a grower who deals in tension, crystalline purity, and a sense of cool slate-driven minerality that feels more like high-altitude Riesling than your typical peppery Grüner. But in a vintage like 2015—a year defined by power, sun, and incredible concentration—this “Privat” bottling becomes a monumental experience.

The Pellingen is Nigl’s prized “Erste Lage” (Grand Cru) vineyard. It’s a steep, terraced site carved out of primary rock and mica schist. While many Austrian Grüners are grown on loess (which gives them that fat, round, vegetal quality), the Pellingen forces the vines to struggle. The result is a wine that is chiseled, upright, and vibrating with energy.

The “Privat” designation is only used for the best tanks from the best sites. In 2015, the fruit reached a level of ripeness that allowed for a massive architecture, but the slate soils ensured it never felt heavy or tropical.

This is a bottle for the cellar. While it’s starting to enter its prime drinking window now, revealing more honeyed, savory complexities, it has the structural integrity to go another decade easily. It is an elite expression of Austrian winemaking that proves Grüner Veltliner belongs on the same stage as the world’s greatest dry whites.
