Occhipinti Nero d’Avola Siccagno 2021
$51.00
If there is one winemaker who has come to define the modern soul of Sicilian viticulture, it is Arianna Occhipinti. Based in the red sands of Vittoria, Arianna has spent her career championing indigenous varieties with a transparency that is nothing short of luminous.
The 2021 “Siccagno” is her definitive statement on Nero d’Avola. Sourced from 35-year-old vines grown in kalkstein (limestone) and red sand, the name itself—derived from the local word siccagna, referring to dry-farmed land—alludes to the concentration and intensity of the fruit. In a vintage defined by clear light and steady ripening, this wine achieves a remarkable tension.
On the nose, it’s a collision of the wild and the elegant. You’ll find brambly black cherry and crushed raspberries intertwined with the savory hallmarks of the Vittoria landscape: wet tobacco, chili pepper, and a distinct aroma of fresh potting soil. On the palate, the wine eschews the heavy, jammy style often associated with the grape. Instead, it offers a nimble, medium-bodied frame with flavors of tart dark fruit, salted licorice, and an ashy, charcoal-like minerality.
Fermented with indigenous yeasts in cement and aged for nearly two years in large, neutral Slavonian oak, the 2021 remains pure and unfiltered. This is a soulful, evocative red that demands a place at the table alongside Pasta alla Norma or herb-roasted lamb.
