Palacios Bierzo Corullon 2018
$57.50
In the Bierzo appellation, perched in the northwest corner of Spain, ancient Mencía vineyards emerge from the steepest of hillsides. This 2018 Villa de Corullón is a stunning example of what winemaking legend Alvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez can achieve in this rugged, slate-rich terrain.
Farmed biodynamically and vinified with natural methods, this is a wine that defies stereotypes. While it possesses the aromatic complexity of a fine Burgundy, it carries a brooding intensity and a mineral-driven Atlantic coolness that is entirely unique to the village of Corullón.
Powerful red and dark berry flavors are braced by a zesty minerality and gain sweetness with air. The red fruit takes the upper hand on the strikingly energetic finish, which leaves floral and Indian spice notes behind. It’s an elegant, soulful match for charcuterie, ripe washed-rind cheeses, or roasted lamb.
