Roagna Barolo Pira 2013

The historic Roagna estate, now in its fifth generation under Luca Roagna, is a benchmark of traditional Piedmontese winemaking. Founded in the early 20th century by Vincenzo Roagna, the estate has remained dedicated to producing deeply structured, terroir-driven wines from Barbaresco and Barolo. Luca, born in 1980 and taking the reins in 2001, has refined the family’s classic approach while preserving its essence: long cask fermentations, extended macerations, and slow aging in custom 10cm-thick French casks that enhance elegance and micro-oxygenation.
The estate’s core holdings are its six and a half hectares of Barbaresco, focused on the celebrated cru Pajè, producing Barbaresco “Pajè,” “Pajè Vecchie Vite,” and “Crichët Pajè” from the vineyard crest. Barolo parcels, including La Pira and Terlo, yield wines of striking depth, while Vecchie Vite selections are drawn from vines older than 50 years. Extended aging—ranging from 2–3 years to over 15 for select Riservas—ensures exceptional longevity.
Beyond Barbaresco and Barolo, Roagna crafts a Langhe Rosso from younger Nebbiolo vines, a Dolcetto, and the Langhe Bianco Solea, a blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo vinified without skins. The estate’s Barbarescos show black fruit, licorice, herbs, and subtle tar, while the Barolos reveal red fruit, black cherry, anise, tar, and woodsmoke—wines of remarkable structure, purity, and cellaring potential.
Under Luca, Roagna continues to exemplify Piedmontese excellence, producing wines that are at once powerful, precise, and enduring.
