Gouffier Mercurey 1er Cru Clos L’Évêque 2020

Clos L’Évêque is one of Mercurey’s true “grand” sites—an east-facing slope with those classic clay-limestone soils that give the Pinot Noir here such incredible structural integrity. In the 2020 vintage, in which sunshine and concentration were plentiful, this wine managed to capture all that power without losing its cool.

On the nose, it’s a deep dive into dark cherries, crushed raspberries, and that gorgeous, damp-earth spice that defines great Burgundy. The palate is where it really sings, though. It’s got muscle and density, but it’s framed by tannins that feel like fine-grained velvet. There’s a persistent, mineral-driven finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.

We love this because it punches way above its weight class. It offers that rare combination of immediate pleasure and serious aging potential. This is a bottle that reminds you why we look to the “satellite” appellations for value—except this doesn’t taste like a value wine; it tastes like a benchmark.
