J.K. Carriere Pinot Noir Antionette Willamette Valley 2021
$72.50
In the world of Willamette Valley Pinot, Jim Prosser is something of a contrarian. While many in Oregon have leaned into the riper, plusher side of the grape, Prosser at J.K. Carriere has spent over two decades doubling down on a different ideal: acid-centric, structured wines built for the long haul. His flagship bottling, Antoinette, named for his grandmother, is the ultimate expression of this “no shortcuts” philosophy.
The 2021 vintage is, quite simply, a stunner. It was a season that allowed for incredible clarity and detail, and Prosser has captured that energy perfectly. Sourced from the high-elevation, 40-year-old “Front Block” at Temperance Hill Vineyard, these old, own-rooted vines dig deep into the basalt soils to deliver a level of nuance you just don’t find in younger plantings.
Prosser favors a higher whole-cluster inclusion and a long, slow elevage (15 months in barrel). This translates to firm, architectural tannins and a bright, citrus-tinged acidity that suggests this wine will be singing for 10 to 15 years. If you’re a Burgundy lover who has been searching for that same sense of place and structure in the New World, or if you’re tired of cocktail Pinots that lack a backbone, the 2021 Antoinette is your answer.
